Why 1,998 cc is the whole argument
The green tax surcharge that came into force on 1 July 2026 starts at 2,000 cc, where it is 2 per cent, and rises to 4 per cent at 4,000 cc. Below 2,000 cc there is no surcharge.
1,998 cc. Two cubic centimetres under, which is not luck: the Chinese market has taxed displacement for years and BMW built to the threshold.

Ground clearance is the specification Nigerians care about most and the one most often guessed at. On this car it is 216 mm and it appears on the vehicle certificate, so it is checkable rather than claimed.
For context, that is genuine SUV clearance rather than the raised-hatchback figure some premium crossovers carry. It matters on a speed bump built by somebody with strong opinions, and it matters on an unmade road in the rains.
The 2018 decision
This is the choice that actually matters on this car, and most buyers do not know it exists.
The X3 changed in 2018 from an imported car to one built in China. Both are legitimate vehicles and both are sold as X3s. They are not identical propositions, and which one you are looking at is worth establishing before you fall in love with a photograph.

What it costs to own
Less than an X5, because there is less of it and the engine is a four rather than a six. More than a CR-V, because it is a German premium car and those consume more of everything.
The two questions to answer before buying remain the same as on any modern German car. Can your mechanic read it diagnostically, and can you get parts where you live without a courier from Lagos every time. If both answers are comfortable, this is a well-judged vehicle for Nigerian conditions. If not, the running cost gap will find you.
Against the Q5L
The Audi Q5L is the natural comparison and it is also under the threshold, at 1,984 cc on every Chinese engine. The Q5L gives you 88 mm more wheelbase, which is real rear legroom. The X3 gives you the published 216 mm of clearance and a chassis most people find more engaging.
Both avoid the green tax. Choose on rear space against ride height, which is a more useful comparison than badge preference.
