A fair question we get is whether a car sourced from China is a Chinese car. For the X5, the answer is no, and it is not a matter of opinion.
BMW builds the X5 at Spartanburg, South Carolina. Every one of them, for every market on earth, including the ones sold in Shanghai showrooms. A Chinese-market X5 was manufactured in the United States, shipped to China, sold there, driven there, and is now being sold on. The build is American. Only the ownership history is Chinese.
Why that is worth saying out loud
People conflate two separate things: where a car was made, and where it was previously owned. For most brands operating in China the two coincide, because there is a local joint-venture plant. The X5 is one of the exceptions. BMW never localised it.
So if the worry is build quality or parts commonality, it does not apply here. An X5 from Guangzhou and an X5 from Munich rolled down the same line in the same state.
What the Chinese history does give you
Something useful, actually. China’s domestic inspection and registration regime keeps a record, so mileage on these cars is generally what it says. Compare that with the situation for used stock coming from markets where the odometer is a suggestion.
The records arrive in Mandarin. That is a real inconvenience if you buy alone and a non-issue if whoever sources the car reads them first. We read them first.
The engine, and the tax on it
The X5 most people want is the 3.0 straight six, turbocharged, in the N55 family or its successors. It is the reason the car drives the way it does and it is above 2,000cc, which puts it in the 2 per cent green tax band that took effect on 1 July 2026.
| Question | Answer for the X5 |
|---|---|
| Where built | Spartanburg, South Carolina. No Chinese assembly, ever. |
| Engine | 3.0 turbocharged straight six on the popular specification |
| Green tax band | 2%, being between 2,000 and 3,999cc |
| Import levy on used vehicles | Cut from 15% to 5% on 1 July 2026 |
| Age limit | 12 years, so 2014 is the oldest importable in 2026 |
| Steering | Left-hand drive required. Chinese-market cars are LHD. |
Running it here
The six is a strong engine that responds well to being serviced on schedule and badly to being ignored. Oil intervals matter more than most owners assume. Find a workshop with proper diagnostic software before you need one, not after a light comes on.
Ground clearance and suspension travel are fine for Lagos and reasonable for most Nigerian roads, though this is a road-biased vehicle rather than something to take up a farm track. If the driving you do genuinely needs low range, that is a different vehicle entirely and we would point you at a pickup instead.
Where it leaves you
An X5 through this route is an American-built car with a documented Chinese service life, landing under a tariff regime that got materially cheaper this year. That is a better proposition than it was in 2025, and the reason has nothing to do with the car changing.
