Eighty Millimetres of Wheelbase Went Straight Into the Back Seat

There is a version of the C-Class sold in China that is 80mm longer between the axles than the one Europe gets. All of that extra length went into rear legroom.

That was not a styling decision. In China, a car at this price is frequently driven by someone the owner employs, and the owner sits behind the driver. Mercedes responded by stretching the cabin where it counted. Nigeria has a good number of buyers in exactly that position, which is how a car designed for Shanghai traffic ends up making sense on Ozumba Mbadiwe.

What the extra length actually gives you

Sit in the back of a standard C-Class with a tall driver in front and you will find your knees making decisions for you. In the long-wheelbase car you do not. It is the difference between a rear seat that works for a school run and one that works for a two-hour drive to a meeting you need to arrive at composed.

Nothing else changes meaningfully. Same width, same boot, same body panels forward of the B-pillar. From outside, most people cannot pick it. From the back seat, everyone can.

The engine question, and it is not the one people ask

Buyers arrive asking for a C300. It is worth understanding what is actually on offer, because the Chinese-market C-Class range runs on engines below 2,000cc across the board. That is a turbocharged four in various states of tune rather than anything larger.

For most of the last decade that was a compromise you accepted. Since 1 July 2026 it is an advantage with a number attached.

What to check before committing

Mileage on Chinese-market cars is generally honest, because the domestic inspection regime records it, but the records come in Mandarin and they are worth reading rather than glancing at. We do that before a car ships.

The other thing to confirm is the trim, since the long-wheelbase range spans a wide spread of equipment. Two cars with the same badge can differ by a great deal of money’s worth of interior.

Who this car is for

If you drive yourself everywhere and never carry adults in the back, buy the standard car and spend the difference elsewhere. If you are regularly the passenger, or you carry clients, or your parents visit and you would rather they were comfortable, the long-wheelbase version solves something the shorter one does not.

It also sits alongside the GLE in a way worth thinking about. One is a sedan built around the back seat. The other is a large SUV built around ground clearance and space. They are answers to different questions.
