Used BMW X3 SUV

A 1,998 cc turbo four making 252 PS and 350 N.m, with 216 mm of ground clearance and xDrive, sitting below the green tax threshold. The cheapest BMW SUV to land and one of the cheaper ones to keep. Left hand drive as built, 2015 or newer. One unit is a normal order.

Description

If you want a BMW that makes sense in Nigeria rather than one that makes a point, this is the one to look at, and there are two concrete reasons rather than a feeling.

The first is the engine size. Every four cylinder X3 sold in China is under 2,000 cc: the older imported car ran a 1,997 cc N20 and the current one a 1,998 cc B48. Since 1 July 2026 Nigeria's green tax has charged nothing below 2,000 cc and two per cent above it, so this car lands in the free band while an X5 does not. On a vehicle at this value, two per cent of CIF is not small change.

The second is that the Chinese certificate actually publishes the ground clearance, which most do not. It is 216 mm fully laden. That is a real, sourced figure rather than a forum guess, and on Nigerian roads it is worth more than most of the specification sheet.

Now the decision that matters on this model. Until 2017 the X3 was imported into China as the F25. From April 2018 BMW Brilliance has built it in Shenyang as the G01. Those are two different cars with different engines and different weaknesses, and the price difference between them tempts people into the older one without understanding what they are choosing.

One correction while we are here, because it circulates. There is no long wheelbase Chinese X3 from this period. BMW stretches the 3 Series for China but not this car, and the G01 runs the standard 2,864 mm wheelbase, same as everywhere else. The long wheelbase X3 is a 2024 model and nothing to do with these.

The volume car is the xDrive30i: 185 kW and 252 PS, 350 N.m from 1,400 to 5,000 rpm, eight speed automatic, full time xDrive, 8.0 litres per 100 km on the Chinese cycle, 4,717 mm long. China also sold an xDrive25i at 184 PS that America never offered, and it is the version most likely to turn up cheaply in a used batch. It is a perfectly good car. It is not the same car.

It is left hand drive as built. Under the twelve year rule 2014 is the oldest year that can legally land in 2026, and we work to 2015 and newer.

Two different cars wear this badge. Know which one you are buying

The imported F25, up to 2017, and its timing chain. The N20 engine's timing chain is the known killer on this generation. The plastic chain guides go brittle and break, the tensioner lets the chain go slack, and it can skip teeth. The warning is a rattle or a click on start up, then a check engine light, rough idle, misfires and lost power. Caught early it is a repair. Ignored it is an engine.

The China built G01, from April 2018, and what it does instead. The B48 does not have the chain problem. It leaks a valve cover gasket at 110,000 to 160,000 km, cracks its plastic oil filter housing and loses coolant, and wants a water pump somewhere around 100,000 to 160,000 km.

One G01 fault BMW fixed, with a part number. The plastic cylinder head coolant ventilation line snaps at the quick disconnect. BMW covered it in a technical bulletin in February 2022 with a revised part, 17129845173, replaced free of charge at dealers. On a Chinese car it is worth asking whether that was done, and the part number is how you ask.

So the price gap between the two is not free money. An older imported F25 is cheaper because it is older, and it carries a failure that ends engines. We will quote both and put the difference in front of you rather than sell you the one with the better margin.

Whichever generation you choose, decide who services it before you buy it. Coscharis is the official BMW channel in Nigeria and prices accordingly; competent independents exist and not all of them have the diagnostic equipment. Nigerian sources put ordinary BMW upkeep at over a million Naira a year, and the X3 sits at the cheaper end of BMW's own range rather than the expensive end.

Specification

Figures are Chinese-market homologation data for the model years we source. The imported F25 and the China built G01 are listed separately because they are genuinely different vehicles. The specific unit is checked against its own paperwork before we quote.

We do not publish prices, because the landed figure depends on the specification, the Customs valuation and the exchange rate on the day you pay.

Minimum order

One unit. Vehicles carry no minimum order quantity, so a single vehicle is a normal order and we handle it the same way as a fleet purchase.

Where you are buying several, consolidating into one shipment reduces the cost per unit. A forty foot container ships at a flat rate whatever is inside it, and that rate divides across the vehicles in it. Freight also forms part of the CIF value duty is calculated on, so the saving reaches the duty bill as well as the shipping invoice.

A mid size SUV packs better than a full size one, so the step from one unit to two is where the per unit figure moves most.

Lead time. About six to eight weeks quay to quay on the Lagos route, plus one to two weeks at origin for inspection, diagnostic scan, export paperwork and loading, and a further period for clearing and the drive out of the port. On used units the time before shipment depends on finding the right car rather than on manufacture.

What decides the right one

The generation, before anything else. An imported F25 from 2015 to 2017 carries the N20 timing chain risk. A China built G01 from April 2018 does not, and has cheaper, slower faults instead. The price gap between them is not a discount, it is the risk priced in.

Then the tune, 25i or 30i, which is a real difference of 68 PS on the same engine and is easy to miss on a used listing.

Then the scan and the cold start, which on an F25 is specifically a listen for chain rattle and on a G01 is a check for coolant loss and the 2022 ventilation line bulletin.

Then the year, because twelve years from manufacture is the legal ceiling and a car bought near the edge loses that margin every year.

And underneath all of it, that this is the BMW that costs the least to land and among the least to keep. If you were choosing BMW for the badge and are open to spending less on tax and fuel, this is the one.

Common questions

What is the minimum order?

One unit. Vehicles carry no minimum order quantity, so a single vehicle is a normal order and we handle it the same way as a fleet purchase.

Does ordering more than one reduce the cost?

Yes, on freight and clearing. A forty foot container ships at a flat rate whatever is inside it, and that rate divides across the vehicles in it. Freight also forms part of the CIF value duty is calculated on, so the saving reaches the duty bill as well as the shipping invoice. This is a mid size SUV, so two fit reasonably.

X3 or X5?

On cost, the X3 by a clear margin. It is under 2,000 cc so it pays no green tax where the X5 pays two per cent, it uses less fuel, and it sits at the cheaper end of BMW's service curve. The X5 is bigger and carries the badge people notice. Buy the X3 if the decision is rational and the X5 if it is not, and there is no shame in either as long as you know which you are doing.

Is 216 mm enough ground clearance for Nigerian roads?

It is more than most saloons and more than several compact SUVs, and it is a published figure rather than a claim. It is not an off road figure. Speed bumps, potholes and flooded urban roads, yes. A rutted site track in the wet season, no.

What is the xDrive25i and should I avoid it?

It is a 184 PS version of the same 1,998 cc engine, sold in China and never in America, and it is the cheaper car in a used batch. It is not a lesser build, only a lesser tune. Buy it knowingly rather than discover it from the boot badge.

How do I know the mileage is real?

You get the VIN, the recorded mileage, a diagnostic scan, the service history and an accident check before you commit. On an F25 we listen to a cold start specifically for the chain.

Which model years can actually land?

Used vehicles more than twelve years old from year of manufacture are prohibited, which makes 2014 the oldest legally importable year in 2026. We work to 2015 and newer.
