The school bag trade has the most predictable demand curve in Nigerian retail and the tightest window to serve it.
Everybody buys inside the same three weeks. A trader who is not stocked by then has missed the year, not the month.
Which means the decision is made in June. Production runs roughly 20 to 30 days and shipping another 30 to 40, so an order placed in August for September arrives in October, when nobody is buying school bags at any price.
Denier is the specification to ask for
Bag fabric is measured in denier, which describes yarn thickness. It is the closest thing this product has to a quality number.
300D is light, cheap, and will not survive a full session of being dragged across a school floor.
600D polyester is the commercial standard for school bags and the right answer for most of your range. Durable enough to last the year without pushing the cost up.
900D and above is heavy duty, and worth it for the older student and commuter segment.
Get the denier in writing. It is the specification most easily reduced between the sample and the production run, and the difference is invisible in a photograph.
Where school bags actually fail
The zip. Number one cause of a bag being thrown away while the fabric is still perfect. Ask about the zip by name and specification, and check the pull tabs, which are the cheapest part and the first to snap.
Shoulder strap anchor points. Where the strap meets the body carries the whole load. It needs bartack reinforcement, not a straight line of stitching that will unpick itself.
The base. Bags get dropped and dragged. A reinforced base is the difference between one session and three.
Stitch density. Count stitches per inch on a sample seam. That is how a cheap factory saves thread and time, and it is the quietest fault to spot.
Three of the four are visible on a sample in about five minutes, which is exactly what pre-shipment inspection is for.
Capacity, matched to age
| Capacity | Who it suits |
|---|---|
| 16 to 18 litres | Younger primary. Small enough to sit properly on a small back. |
| 18 to 22 litres | Upper primary and junior secondary. The volume size in Nigeria. |
| 22 litres and above | Senior secondary and anyone carrying a laptop. Overlaps with the commuter market. |
Our children’s school backpacks run 16 to 22 litres in 600D polyester across a range of colours and prints.
The comfort features that justify a higher price
Nigerian schoolchildren carry heavy loads and parents notice this.
Padded contoured shoulder straps that spread weight rather than cutting into a shoulder. A padded back panel. A chest strap on the larger sizes to hold the load close to the body.
These cost the factory very little, and they are what lets a retailer sell the better bag instead of competing on price alone. A parent choosing between two bags will pay more for the one that looks like it will not hurt their child’s shoulders.
Prints, and the one to avoid
Character prints sell quickly. They are also the fastest way to have a consignment seized or land in a dispute, because licensed cartoon characters on unlicensed goods are counterfeit. We do not quote for them.
Original prints, patterns, sports themes and strong solid colours all sell perfectly well and carry none of that risk.
Stock a spread. Bright prints for the younger bands, plainer bags in navy, black and grey for the older students who have stopped wanting cartoons and would be embarrassed by them.
Building the order and the season
1,000 pieces across the whole order, with colours and prints mixed freely rather than per colour. That is what makes a proper spread of sizes and designs possible on a first order.
Better still, build the whole resumption season into one consignment. The parent buying a school bag in that fortnight is also buying sandals, jeans and t-shirts. One shipment, one clearing, one landed cost.
For the older student and commuter market, casual and laptop backpacks extend the same customer into the rest of the year.
The freight note
Bags are bulky and light, so sea freight is charged on the space they occupy. How they are packed decides your landed cost per unit more than the ex-works price does.
Ask how many fit a container before comparing quotes, and ask whether they ship compressed.
Tell us the sizes and when you need them
Age bands, quantity, and the date the stock has to be on your shelf. We will work the timeline backwards from resumption, confirm denier, zip specification and stitch density with the supplier, inspect before shipment, and give you the landed cost per piece in naira with every line itemised.
