Custom prints, custom labels and non-standard colours each tend to carry their own minimum on top of the base figure. A first order is nearly always better placed on stock colours in a standard size run, with branding added once you know which colours actually move.

What decides the right one

Fabric weight against how the shirt is worn comes first. A child in a heavier 180 GSM shirt is comfortable in harmattan and further north; the same shirt in Lagos heat by midday is a shirt the child wants off. If the order is going into daily school wear rather than occasional wear, weigh comfort in the actual climate the child lives in, not what feels substantial in your hand.

Then the size chart, which is the single most common source of a children's wear dispute. Age labels are not standardised between factories: a size 8 from one mill and a size 8 from another can differ by several centimetres. Get the chart in centimetres before you commit to a size split, and if you are supplying a school, get a sample garment measured against an actual child in that age range.

Then the colour split, which the mixable minimum lets you actually use. A thousand pieces spread across six or seven colours tells you what your specific market takes, rather than what you guessed it would take, and a repeat order is then placed on evidence.

Then the sample, which is the one part of this worth being slow about. Approve a physical piece, wash it once yourself, and keep it in your office before bulk production starts. It settles every argument afterwards, and without one you have no position at all when the goods do not match the conversation.
