Most people importing clothing into Nigeria are competing for the same market customer with the same t-shirts. Workwear sits next to that market and almost nobody serves it properly.
The buyer is a company rather than an individual. They order in hundreds, they order again next year, they order more when they hire, and they judge on durability rather than on price, because a trouser that fails in three months costs them more than the difference.

For most Nigerian applications, cotton twill is the sensible base and ripstop is the upgrade for work where things catch. Both should be specified with a fabric weight, because “twill” alone covers everything from a light chino to genuine workwear cloth.
Where work trousers fail, and what to specify
- The crotch seam. Where four seams meet and where squatting puts all the strain. Reinforced, or it goes first. This is the single commonest workwear failure.
- The knee. Kneeling wears it through. Double-layer or reinforced knees roughly double the working life, and on some styles a knee-pad pocket is available.
- Pocket bags. Workers carry tools, phones and keys. A thin pocket bag tears and then everything falls through the trouser leg.
- Bartacking. At belt loops, pocket corners and every stress point. It is fast and cheap for a factory to do and the first thing skipped.
- Zip and button. A metal zip and a properly set button. Cheap plastic fails and the garment is finished.
All five are visible on a sample. Pull hard on each one. A supplier who will not send a sample to be destroyed is not a supplier for workwear.
Cargo pockets, and how many is too many
Cargo pockets are the reason many workers prefer these trousers, and there is a point where more becomes worse. Pockets that flap, catch on things, or sit where a worker kneels are a nuisance rather than a feature.
Look for pockets with flaps that actually close, positioned where they do not interfere with movement, and bartacked at the corners. Two well-placed cargo pockets beat four badly placed ones, and the workers will tell their employer which they prefer.
The commercial case for the corporate order
A construction firm, a facility management company, a factory, a security outfit, a haulage business: each of them kits out staff and each of them replaces that kit on a cycle. That is repeating, forecastable demand of a kind retail never gives you.
Two things win that business. Consistency, so this year’s order matches last year’s in colour and fit, which means specifying properly and buying from the same production rather than the cheapest quote each time. And the ability to brand, since work trousers take embroidery and a company name on the thigh or the pocket is what turns a trouser into a uniform.
Sizing runs 30 to 44 waist on our men’s cargo and work trousers, in cotton twill and ripstop, with colours and sizes mixed freely across the order. Get the actual measurements per size in writing, and be aware that workwear is usually ordered a size up over a fitted trouser because it is worn over other clothing and has to allow movement.
Building the order
1,000 pieces across the whole order rather than per colour or per style. A workwear order pairs naturally with polo shirts for the upper half of the same uniform, which is how a supplier serves a whole company rather than half of it.
On freight, work trousers are heavy for apparel and take real container space, so packing density matters. Work out the landed cost per piece rather than per carton.
