Description

Here is something most people do not expect. The X5 that China imported was not built in Germany. Look at the vehicle certificate on a Chinese F15 and the VIN begins 5UXKR0C3, which is BMW's plant at Spartanburg in South Carolina. It is the same line that built the American car.

So a Chinese X5 is mechanically the American X5: same N55 turbocharged straight six at 2,979 cc, same ZF eight speed automatic, same body, same xDrive. What differs is the trim naming, which reads Elegant, Leading, Luxury, Premium and M Luxury Sport rather than xLine and M Sport, and the output convention, where China quotes 306 PS to America's 300 hp for the identical engine.

One thing China never had was a four cylinder X5. So unlike most of what we source from that market, there is no version of this car below the 2,000 cc green tax line. At 2,979 cc it sits in the two per cent band that has applied since 1 July 2026, and that belongs in your landed figure from the beginning.

The numbers: 225 kW and 306 PS, 400 N.m, 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, 4,909 mm long on a 2,933 mm wheelbase per the Chinese certificate. Published European figures give 4,886 mm for the same car, most likely a bumper difference between the standard and sport bodies. We quote the certificate and let you see both numbers rather than averaging them into one that is true of nothing.

On fuel, the published Chinese cycle figure is 9.7 litres per 100 km. Chinese owners of the 2017 car report an average of 12.27 litres per 100 km across more than 200,000 km of real driving. Plan around the owner figure. It is the honest one.

It is left hand drive as built. Under the twelve year rule 2014 is the oldest year that can legally land in 2026, and we work to 2015 and newer.

What a used X5 costs to keep, and the four things that fail

Start with the running cost, because it decides everything else. Nigerian figures put annual BMW maintenance at roughly 1.2 to 1.9 million Naira before any major repair, and BMW's own service curve makes the 3 Series the cheapest car in the range to keep. The X5 sits at the expensive end of that curve, not the cheap end. Coscharis is the only officially recognised BMW service provider in Nigeria and prices accordingly, while independent workshops vary widely in whether they have the diagnostic equipment.

The electric water pump is the one that costs you an engine. On the N55 it fails anywhere from 50,000 to 200,000 km with little warning, and when it goes the engine overheats quickly. Codes run 2E81 to 2E85 and 377A. Many owners replace it preventively with the thermostat, and on a car of this age that is a sensible line to put in the budget rather than a repair to wait for.

Three slower leaks that are simply age. The valve cover and its gasket weep, with the crankcase ventilation valve built into the cover. The oil filter housing gasket drips oil onto the belt and the mounts. VANOS solenoids clog and throw codes 2A9A, 2A9B, 2A82, 2A98 and 2A99. All three are known, all three are priced, none of them is a reason to walk away from an otherwise good car.

One reputation that does not apply here. The high pressure fuel pump failures that damaged the N55's name were confined to 2010 and early to mid 2011 engines and were resolved by late 2011. On a 2015 or newer car it is not a live concern, and anyone using it to talk your price down is working from old information.

We scan every unit, start it cold, and put the codes and the service history in front of you before you commit. If the budget is the purchase price and nothing more, this is the wrong car and we will say so rather than take the order.

One unit. Vehicles carry no minimum order quantity, so a single vehicle is a normal order and we handle it the same way as a fleet purchase.

Where you are buying several, consolidating into one shipment reduces the cost per unit. A forty foot container ships at a flat rate whatever is inside it, and that rate divides across the vehicles in it. Freight also forms part of the CIF value duty is calculated on, so the saving reaches the duty bill as well as the shipping invoice.

A full size SUV takes real volume, so the container maths is tighter here than on a saloon. We quote container and roll on roll off side by side and tell you which wins at your quantity.

Lead time. About six to eight weeks quay to quay on the Lagos route, plus one to two weeks at origin for inspection, diagnostic scan, export paperwork and loading, and a further period for clearing and the drive out of the port. Where preventive work is agreed before shipment, such as the water pump and thermostat, the workshop time is added and we tell you what it adds.

What decides the right one

Whether you have a workshop before you have the car. On this vehicle that is the first decision, not the last. A BMW with a mechanic who owns the diagnostic equipment is a good car. The same BMW without one is a slow, expensive education.

Then the budget behind the purchase price. One and a bit million Naira a year is the figure Nigerian sources put on ordinary BMW upkeep, and an X5 is above the middle of that range rather than below it.

Then the service record and the scan, because the N55's failures are known, dated and visible to anyone who looks properly.

Then the green tax, which is two per cent of CIF on this car and nil on an X3. That is a real difference at this value and it should be a conscious choice.

If it was built in America, why buy it from China?

Because it is left hand drive, because the Chinese used market is deep and its records are traceable, and because a car that spent its life in Chinese cities has a different history from one that came out of an American salvage auction. You are buying the same machine with a better documented past.

Is there a cheaper X5 that avoids the green tax?

Not from China. There was no four cylinder X5 in that market, so every unit is at least 2,979 cc and pays the two per cent band. If avoiding it matters more than the badge, the X3 is 1,998 cc and pays nothing, and we would rather point you there than pretend this one is something it is not.

Can a Nigerian workshop actually service it?

Yes, with the caveat that not every workshop has the diagnostic equipment. Coscharis is the official channel and there are competent independents. Parts come through Ladipo and through import, and customs duty is part of why they cost what they do. Decide who will service it before you buy it, not after.

How do I know the mileage is real?

You get the VIN, the recorded mileage, a diagnostic scan, the service history and an accident check before you commit. Where the record and the car disagree we say so and move to another unit.

Which model years can actually land?

Used vehicles more than twelve years old from year of manufacture are prohibited, which makes 2014 the oldest legally importable year in 2026. We work to 2015 and newer.
