Rechargeable Fan Runtimes Are Measured on the Lowest Speed

Every rechargeable fan on the market advertises a runtime. Almost every one of those figures was measured on the lowest speed, in a laboratory, with a new battery.

Run the same fan on speed three in a hot room in April and you will get a fraction of it.

Nobody is technically lying. They are quoting the best case and letting you assume it is the normal one.

Reading a runtime claim

The honest way to compare two fans is to ignore the headline hours entirely and look at two numbers instead. Battery capacity in watt-hours, and motor draw at each speed. Divide one by the other and you have real runtime per speed.

Most sellers quote capacity in milliamp-hours, which means nothing on its own because it depends on voltage. A 10,000 mAh pack at 3.7V and a 10,000 mAh pack at 12V hold very different amounts of energy. If you are given mAh, ask for the voltage too, then multiply.

Three things decide whether it lasts

Motor type. A brushless DC motor draws less for the same airflow and lasts longer than a brushed one. On a battery-powered product, efficiency is runtime, so this single choice matters more than battery size does.

Battery chemistry. LiFePO4 tolerates heat and daily cycling better than the cheaper lithium-ion cells. A fan used every evening through the hot season is on a demanding duty cycle by any standard.

Blade and grille design. Measured airflow is not the same as blade diameter. A well designed 16 inch fan moves more air than a badly designed one and uses less power doing it.

The solar panel question, answered straight

A great many rechargeable fans are sold as solar fans, and this deserves a plain answer.

A small panel on a fan is a supplement. It is not a power source. Do the arithmetic: a modest panel gathering a few hours of usable Nigerian sun collects a certain number of watt-hours, and a standing fan on medium consumes them considerably faster than that.

The panel extends your evening. It does not run the fan indefinitely.

That is still worth having, particularly where mains is genuinely scarce and a daytime top-up is the difference between having a fan at night and not. But if a seller implies the panel makes the fan self-sufficient, ask for the panel wattage and the motor draw and do the division yourself.

What the search order tells you

Nigerians search for rechargeable fan price, then the battery, then the charger.

Read that sequence and it tells the whole story of the product. People buy it. The battery degrades. They go looking for a replacement. They cannot find one.

That is the biggest weakness in this category. A fan with a proprietary sealed pack and no spare available is disposable, whatever the warranty says. If you are stocking these, a model with a standard replaceable cell and an available charger is worth more to your customers than an extra hour of claimed runtime, and worth more to you in repeat business.

Buying for resale

Decision What we would do
Size mix Standing fans for rooms, smaller table and clip units for shops, desks and market stalls. Different customers, both real.
Timing Order for the hot season, which means ordering well before it. Production is 20 to 30 days, shipping another 30 to 40.
Freight Fans are bulky and light, so freight is charged on space. Ask how many fit a container before comparing unit prices.
Spares Bring chargers and, where possible, replacement cells in the same consignment. That is where the second sale lives.
