Ask why a compound has cameras at the front gate and nothing at the back, and the answer is almost never money.
It is that running cable to the back wall means a trench, a conduit, a spur off the distribution board and somebody competent to do all three. So it never gets done.
A camera carrying its own panel and its own battery deletes that entire conversation. It goes on the wall, connects over WiFi, and does not care whether the mains is on.
Four numbers decide whether it works

Why event recording is the whole design
A solar camera cannot record twenty-four hours a day on a small battery. It is not supposed to.
It sleeps, wakes when its motion sensor triggers, records the event, and goes back to sleep. That is what makes the power budget work.
And it is why detection quality matters more than any other feature. A camera that triggers on every moth and every moving branch will flatten its battery by two in the morning and fill the card with nothing. Look for PIR detection combined with human or vehicle recognition rather than raw pixel-change detection.
The WiFi question, answered honestly
This is where installations disappoint, and it has nothing to do with the camera.
The back gate is the furthest point from the router by definition. Most of these cameras run on 2.4GHz, which travels further through walls than 5GHz, and that choice is deliberate. But there is a limit. If the signal at the mounting point is weak, the camera keeps dropping, the app keeps failing to connect, and the owner blames the hardware.
Check the signal at the exact spot before ordering. If it is marginal, the fix is an access point or a repeater rather than a better camera.
Cameras with a SIM slot answer the case where there is genuinely no network to reach, and they bring a data cost that belongs in the budget from the start rather than as a surprise in month two.
Storage, and the recurring cost nobody mentions
A memory card in the camera is a one-off cost with no subscription and no data bill for uploading. The weakness is obvious. If somebody takes the camera, they take the footage.
Cloud storage survives the camera being stolen, which is precisely when the footage matters most. It costs a monthly fee, and every recorded event uploads over the network, which on a metered connection adds up faster than people expect.
For most compounds the sensible answer is a card in every camera as standard, and cloud on the one covering the approach where a theft would actually begin.
Before you commit a consignment
Weatherproofing, IP65 or better, and mean it. Nigerian rain is not a light drizzle and these live outdoors permanently.
Heat tolerance, because the battery sits in a sealed housing in full sun and the chemistry and thermal design decide whether it survives two hot seasons.
App quality, which is what the customer uses every day and the most common source of complaints. Test it properly before committing to a container.
And NCC type approval on anything with a SIM slot, since that makes it communications equipment. The Commission keeps a public database and checking a model takes minutes.

The same wall usually needs both. A camera records what happened. A light often stops it happening at all, and it gives the camera something to see.
