An All-in-One Street Light Removes the Trench, the Cable and the Meter

A conventional street light needs a cable run, a trench, a connection and a meter somebody pays every month.

On an estate road, a church compound, a school perimeter or a filling station forecourt, that infrastructure routinely costs more than the lamps do.

The all-in-one solar street light deletes the whole list. Panel, battery, controller and LED head sit in one sealed body that bolts to a pole. Two people and a ladder install one in under an hour. There is no bill afterwards.

That is the case for it. Now the parts people get wrong.

Wattage is the least useful number on the box

Listings lead with wattage because buyers recognise it. It tells you almost nothing about how much light lands on the ground.

What matters is lumens, and more precisely lumens per watt. Two 60W heads can differ by a factor of two in real output depending on the LED chips inside. Ask for the lumen figure and the chip brand. If the seller can supply neither, the wattage figure is decoration.

The second thing that matters is beam pattern. A street light is meant to throw light down the road in a long rectangle, not in a circle directly beneath itself. A cheap head with the wrong optics gives you bright pools with dark gaps between them, which is worse for security than an even dimmer wash, because the dark patches are where anyone would stand.

The four numbers to ask for

Lumens, not watts, and the LED chip brand behind the figure.

Battery capacity in watt-hours, with the chemistry named. LiFePO4 tolerates Nigerian heat far better than standard lithium-ion and lasts longer for it.

Panel wattage, so you can judge whether it can genuinely refill that battery in a day.

Autonomy, meaning how many nights it runs with no sun at all. Three is a sensible target, because the rainy season does not negotiate.

The relationship between those four is the entire product. A big battery with a small panel never fully charges. A big panel with a small battery is bright until midnight and dark at three.

Heat is the enemy and Nigeria has plenty

An all-in-one unit puts the battery directly behind the panel, in a sealed housing, in full sun for eight hours a day. That is a demanding environment for any cell.

Which is why chemistry matters more here than on almost any other solar product. LiFePO4 handles high ambient temperature and deep daily cycling with far less degradation than the cheaper cells that turn up in budget units. A light that dies after fourteen months has usually died at the battery, not the lamp.

Housing matters too. Aluminium sheds heat. Plastic does not. On a product designed to sit in the sun, an aluminium body earns its price.

Motion sensing is not a gimmick

Most decent units run at reduced output through the quiet hours and jump to full brightness when something moves.

It sounds like a marketing feature. It is actually the single largest extension to runtime available, because full brightness all night is what flattens the battery by the time the rains arrive.

Set it sensibly. Dim to something genuinely useful rather than to nothing, so the road is never fully dark, and let the sensor lift it when a car or a person arrives.

What the search behaviour tells you

The autocomplete on this product is unusually revealing. People search for solar street light with CCTV camera almost as often as they search for the light itself.

That is not a coincidence. The reason most compounds want light at the gate is security, and a camera on the same pole running off the same principle is the obvious pairing.

If that is your actual requirement, treat it as one problem. Our solar WiFi security cameras need no cable either, and specifying both together avoids the common outcome where the light works and the camera has nowhere to draw power from.

Poles, which nobody budgets for

The light is not the whole cost. Poles, foundations and the labour to set them are a substantial part of any project, and they are usually sourced locally, because shipping steel tube across an ocean makes very little sense.

Get the mounting interface confirmed before the consignment leaves. A head that does not fit the bracket your fabricator made is an avoidable week.

Before the order goes in

These are electrical goods, so SONCAP certification is arranged at origin. They contain lithium cells, so the consignment travels as dangerous goods under UN3480 or UN3481 with test documentation and correct marking. And they are bulky for their value, so packing density and a full container load do more for your landed cost per unit than haggling on unit price ever will.

Project or stock

For a specific site, count the poles, decide the spacing, and specify autonomy against the worst week of the rains rather than the average. Under-specifying autonomy is the complaint that comes back.

For stock, the market splits cleanly. Small units for compound gates, larger ones for estate roads and commercial frontage. Both sell. The ones that get returned are the ones where the battery was the cheapest part of the build.
