Tablet Presses and Pharmaceutical Compression

In pharmaceutical work the machine is the smaller half of the purchase. The documentation that comes with it is what NAFDAC reads, and a press without it is an expensive delay.

Description

A rotary tablet press compresses powder or granulate into tablets of controlled weight, hardness and thickness. Powder is fed into dies on a rotating turret, punches compress it, and the finished tablet is ejected and swept off.

Single rotary machines cover most startup and small batch production. Double rotary machines compress at two stations per revolution and are what manufacturers move to when volume rather than flexibility becomes the constraint. As a rough guide, single rotary presses in this class run in the range of 50,000 to 300,000 tablets per hour, and double rotary machines from around 300,000 up to 700,000, with the exact figure depending on turret size, tooling and the formulation itself.

The same machines are used well outside pharmaceuticals, for nutraceuticals, veterinary products, effervescent tablets, catalyst pellets and detergent blocks. The regulatory weight is heaviest on the pharmaceutical side.

What NAFDAC expects

Demonstrable consistency. The press must produce tablets of consistent weight, hardness and composition within stated limits. That is a documented capability rather than a claim.

Qualification documents. Installation Qualification, Operational Qualification and Performance Qualification. Ask whether the supplier provides IQ, OQ and PQ protocols with the machine, and get the answer in writing before you order. Producing them afterwards is far harder and sometimes impossible.

Batch records. The key process parameters for every production run must be recorded, and any critical deviation must be identifiable. Presses with automatic batch report generation make that ordinary rather than laborious.

The premises, not only the press. Approval covers the facility. Room classification, airflow, gowning and material flow are assessed alongside the equipment, and they are the part buyers underestimate.

Specification

These are the parameters that decide the right press. Figures are confirmed against the specific model and against written supplier data before we quote.

Number of stations Sets output alongside turret speed. More stations is not automatically better, because tooling cost rises with them.
Tooling standard TSM or EU, B or D type. This decides where you can buy punches and dies, and at what price. Punches are consumables, so a machine on an unusual standard costs you for its whole life.
Maximum tablet diameter Fixed by the die bore. Confirm it against every product you intend to make, including the ones planned for later.
Maximum compression force In kN. Formulations differ, and a press short of force on your hardest product cannot be persuaded.
Contact part materials Stainless steel of a stated grade on every surface touching product. Ask for the grade in the specification rather than accepting the word stainless.
Dust containment Extraction and sealing at the compression zone. This is an operator health matter as much as a cross contamination one.
Force monitoring and rejection Compaction force based weight monitoring with automatic rejection of out of specification tablets. This is what turns quality control from sampling into something continuous.
Documentation set IQ, OQ and PQ protocols, material certificates, and an operating and maintenance manual in English. Specify it in the purchase order.
Total connected load In kW, including the dust extraction unit and any deduster or metal checker running with it.

Minimum order

One machine. There is no minimum on production equipment, and a single press is a normal order.

Tooling is the exception. Punch and die sets are usually quoted per set for a given tablet shape, and most suppliers apply a minimum on a custom shape or an embossed logo. We ask for that figure in writing and include it, because tooling ordered after the press arrives adds weeks to your start date.

Lead time is manufacture plus shipping plus clearing, and custom tooling frequently runs longer than the machine itself.

What decides the right one

The tooling standard, before output. It looks like a detail on a specification sheet and it is the decision you live with, because punches wear and get replaced for as long as you own the press. A machine on a common standard can be re-tooled from several suppliers. A machine on a proprietary one has a single source that knows it.

Then the documentation. Two presses of identical output are not the same purchase if one arrives with qualification protocols and the other does not. That difference decides how long your facility waits for approval, and waiting is the expensive part.

Then your formulation. Compression force, dwell time and feeder type are chosen against what you are actually compressing. A supplier who quotes without asking what the product is has not engaged with the job.
