Monocrystalline Solar Panels and Kits

Solar stopped being an idea in Nigeria some time ago and turned into a line in people's budgets. Households stepping up from a generator, shops that cannot afford to close for another day, boreholes, base stations, security lighting. Every one of those begins with a panel and a controller. The awkward part is that what separates a good panel from a bad one never shows up in a photograph, which is precisely why this category needs somebody checking before your money moves.

Description

Ten years back, a solar panel in Nigeria was mostly a telecoms thing, bolted to a mast behind somebody's fence. Then diesel got expensive. Then it got very expensive, and once the subsidy came off in 2023 the panel moved off the mast and onto the roof of an ordinary bungalow. That shift is the market you are selling into now, and it is still growing while government keeps circling the question of whether to restrict panel imports at all. The proposal has been floating for a good while without landing. Worth watching. It has changed nothing yet.

The kit in the photograph is a rigid monocrystalline module with a waterproof charge controller and the connection leads. Mono over poly matters here, though usually not for the reason people give. Mono cells put out more watts per square metre and hold their output better as the cell heats up, and on a Nigerian roof the limit is nearly always area rather than money. A poly panel of the same rated wattage eats more roof and hands back less on a hot afternoon. In this country, most afternoons are hot ones.

The controller is the piece buyers skate straight past and then regret. A 20A unit rated for 12V and 24V is what lets the panel work with a battery bank somebody already owns, and the waterproof housing is what lets it be mounted where the cable run actually goes rather than shoved into a cupboard indoors. PWM is cheap and perfectly adequate on a small system. MPPT costs more and pulls a meaningful amount extra out of the same panel, especially on a grey harmattan morning when irradiance is poor. We will tell you which one the job justifies instead of quietly defaulting to the cheaper one.

Now the wattage, which is where the category gets slippery. A panel badged 100W carries that figure from standard test conditions, meaning a set irradiance and a cell temperature of 25 degrees. No Nigerian rooftop has ever run at 25 degrees. A genuine panel lands somewhat under its label in real service, and that is expected and normal and nothing to complain about. An underspecified panel lands far under, and no amount of sunshine repairs it. That gap lives in the cells, the glass and the lamination, and it only becomes visible when somebody puts the thing under load and watches the meter.

One that still irritates us. A supplier quoted anodised aluminium frames and shipped a batch with sections so thin the panel flexed when two men lifted it by opposite corners. Nothing arrived broken. Nothing was technically wrong on paper either. But you cannot bolt a panel that bends onto a rusting roof sheet in Ojo and expect the lamination to see out a rainy season. So now somebody weighs the frame section and leans on it, which sounds crude next to a certificate and catches considerably more.

Specification

The list below is what gets nailed down before anybody books space on a ship. Every line is checked against the named supplier and against a sample we have put under load ourselves. Real output carries the most weight, since the rated figure in this category is optimistic far more often than it is honest.

Cell type Monocrystalline. Higher output per square metre and better high-temperature behaviour than polycrystalline.
Rated output 100W on the kit pictured. Available across the range. We test real output under load rather than trusting the label.
System voltage Suits 12V and 24V systems via the supplied controller. Must match the customer's battery bank.
Controller 20A waterproof charge controller included in this kit. PWM as standard, MPPT available and worth it on larger systems.
Construction Tempered glass over laminated cells in an anodised aluminium frame. Frame rigidity is a real quality difference.
Junction box Sealed weatherproof box with bypass diodes. This is a common cost-cutting point and we check it.
Connectors Standard solar connectors and leads supplied with the kit, so no separate sourcing is needed.
Flexible option Semi-flexible panels are produced in the same wattages for curved or weight-limited mounting. Say if you need them.
Typical use Household backup, shops, boreholes, security lighting, vehicles and camping. Sizing follows the load, never the budget.
Weight and glass Rigid panels are heavy and fragile in transit. Packing specification matters more here than on any other product we list.

Minimum order

The floor is 50 panels, counted across the order rather than per wattage. Hundred-watt modules and larger ones travelling together still add up to the same fifty. On this product the case for pushing toward 100 is stronger than on almost anything else we handle. Panels are heavy, rigid and shipped on pallets, so freight and crating make up a large slice of what you pay landed, and both fall away sharply per unit once you are filling a full pallet configuration instead of paying for part of one. Anywhere near 100, ask us to price both numbers side by side. The gap tends to surprise people.

Lead time. Reckon on 20 to 30 days in production for a standard module, longer if you want a non-standard frame or your own label on the back sheet. Sea freight into Apapa or Tin Can adds roughly 30 to 40 days, and rigid panels nearly always want a full container rather than groupage, because groupage means your glass gets stacked by somebody with no stake in it arriving whole. SONCAP runs alongside production. Clearing is the unpredictable leg, and a heavy load needs equipment at both ends, so arrange your offloading before the container leaves the port rather than after it turns up.

What decides the right one

Start with the number, since it is the first thing people query. Fifty. Work backwards from it and it stops looking arbitrary. A panel is glass in an aluminium frame, heavy and breakable, which forces sea freight, pallets, proper crating, and somebody specifying that crating before production begins. All of it has a floor underneath that does not shrink just because your order is small. A SONCAP file costs the same whether five panels are coming or five hundred. Below fifty, freight and packing per panel drive the landed price above what is already sitting in the market here, and no amount of negotiating gets round that. Fifty to a hundred, the arithmetic works. Past a hundred it works comfortably.

Which brings us to the picture. There is a controller and a set of leads in that frame alongside the panel, put there on purpose, because a bare panel is half a purchase and nobody buys half a purchase. Seeing the controller starts the right argument immediately: charging what, at which voltage, and is the controller in that box good enough for the job.

Treat the whole image as an example of the type rather than a product code. Venocipal buys against a brief. Wattage, cell type, frame section, PWM or MPPT, cabling in the box or not, all of that gets settled while we quote, because a trader selling single panels to households around Ogbete and a contractor kitting out a borehole are buying two different things that happen to share a name. Nothing here is sitting on a shelf. Common questions

How many panels before you will quote?

Fifty, counted across the whole order. Different wattages in the same shipment add up toward that fifty instead of each needing its own.

Mono or poly?

Mono, in almost every Nigerian job. More output per square metre and better behaviour once the cell gets hot, which is what counts when roof area is your constraint and it usually is.

Will a 100W panel actually give me 100W?

Not on a hot roof, and no honest panel anywhere does. The label comes from a 25-degree bench test. A real panel gets reasonably close. A bad one is nowhere near. We test under load and tell you the number we measured.

PWM or MPPT?

PWM is cheaper and fine on small systems. MPPT harvests noticeably more, particularly in poor light, and earns its money back on larger installations. Give us the system size and we will say which.

What about the import ban people keep mentioning?

It has been proposed and debated and it has not been enacted. Panels are still importable. We watch it closely because it would change landed pricing overnight, and we would flag it to you before you paid a deposit.

How do you keep them from arriving smashed?

Specify the packing before production, inspect it before it sails, insure the load. Breakage is a preventable failure and we treat it as one.

You do not have to arrive knowing wattages or controller types. Tell us what the system has to carry, a house, a shop, a borehole pump, a run of security lights, and what battery voltage your customers already run on. We come back with a panel size, the controller that suits it, and a landed price. Already selling a panel you are happy with? A photograph of the back label is usually enough for us to track it down. Quotes cost nothing and commit you to nothing. And when a panel will not do what its label says, you will hear it from us rather than from your customer three months later.
