Fast Charging Needs Three Things to Agree, and the Cable Is the One People Forget

Fast charging printed on a box is not a specification. It is a claim, and on its own it commits the seller to nothing at all.

What makes it real is a named protocol at a stated wattage. Power Delivery over USB-C, or Quick Charge, with a number attached. Anything vaguer than that is a charger that will charge a phone eventually.

Three things have to agree

This is the part customers never understand and shopkeepers get blamed for.

The adapter must support the protocol at the wattage claimed. The phone must support the same protocol, because a phone built for one fast-charge standard will not fast-charge on a different one, it will quietly fall back to ordinary speed. And the cable must be rated to carry the current.

Break any of the three and the customer gets slow charging and brings back the adapter, which was probably fine.

The cable is where the reputation goes

Cables look identical. They are not.

A cheap cable uses thin conductors that cannot carry the current a fast charger wants to deliver, so the charging negotiation drops to a safe low speed. The customer watches a 65W charger charging like a 10W one and concludes the charger is fake.

For higher-wattage USB-C charging the cable also needs the right internal signalling to advertise what it can carry. Without it, the cable is treated as a basic one regardless of how thick it looks in the hand.

If you stock chargers without stocking cables that match them, you are selling half a product and collecting complaints for the whole thing.

Why GaN is worth knowing about

Gallium nitride adapters run cooler and deliver the same power in a noticeably smaller body than older silicon designs.

For a customer the visible benefit is a multi-port charger that is not the size of a brick and does not get uncomfortably hot on a bedside table.

Heat matters more here than in cooler countries. An adapter that runs warm in a temperate room runs hot in Lagos in March, and heat is what ages the components inside it.

Multi-port, and the number that gets hidden

Multi-port chargers are the volume seller, because one adapter covering a phone, a tablet and a set of earbuds is genuinely useful.

The specification to demand is total output shared across all ports, not the figure printed beside each one. A charger advertising a high wattage on each of four ports almost never delivers that on all four at once.

Ask what happens when every port is occupied, because that is how the customer will actually use it.

Safety, which is not optional here

Cable conductor gauge Stated rather than assumed. It decides whether the fast charging is real.

Counterfeit branded chargers are widely offered and we do not quote for them. They are the worst possible product to have your name attached to, because the failure mode is a fire in somebody’s bedroom.

Buying for resale

The market has moved decisively to USB-C. Stock C-to-C and C-to-Lightning, keep some A-to-C for older phones, and be honest that micro-USB is now a legacy line rather than a main one.

These are the ideal attachment sale. Every power bank, every set of earbuds and every smart watch customer needs a cable, and the margin on accessories is usually better than on the device that brought them in.

They are also unusually good on freight. Small, dense and reasonably valuable per cubic metre, which is rare in a category full of bulky low-value goods.
