Manufacturers Association of Nigeria data puts average daily grid availability at 16.7 hours in the first half of 2025, falling to 13.1 hours in the second half. Nigerian manufacturers spent N1.34 trillion on alternative power in 2025, up 21 per cent on the year before.

Those are national figures for large industry. The direction they point in applies to a block yard running a mixer and a vibration press.

Three and a half hours is a shift

That is roughly what disappeared from the average day between the two halves of last year. For a yard that mixes and presses on grid power when it can, three and a half hours moving onto the generator is a straight cost increase with nothing to show for it.

The arithmetic is simple enough to do on paper. A decent generator gives you around 3.0 to 3.5 kilowatt-hours from a litre of diesel at sensible load. Divide your pump price by roughly three and that is your cost per unit of self-generated power. Compare it against your tariff band. Most producers have never run this comparison once.

Where this bites hardest on a block yard

The press and the mixer are not the whole story. A vibration press draws hard while it runs, and a mixer draws steadily. Together they set your total connected load, and that figure decides three things at once: what generator you need, whether it trips when the press kicks in, and what every hour of production costs you in diesel.

Two machines can be quoted at the same price and have very different connected loads. The cheaper machine to buy is often the more expensive one to run, and the difference compounds across every hour of every day for the life of the equipment.

Ask for the number before you ask for the price

Total connected load in kilowatts, for press and mixer together. Get it in writing from the supplier before you get excited about output figures.

It is the single specification that has stopped more installations than any other, usually at the moment somebody discovers the generator on site cannot carry the machine alongside the lights and the office. And it is the number that quietly decides your running cost long after you have forgotten what the machine cost to buy.

Sand and cement are the visible costs in this business. Diesel is the one that eats a yard slowly, on a bill nobody itemises against production.
